In the late 18th century, an American whaling fleet was built to take advantage of the large numbers of whales off the American east coast. Towns like Cape Cod, Nantucket and New Bedford became the whaling towns of America. Watchtowers were built here and when whales were sighted, the whaling boats would be sent out.
